A NOTE ABOUT BUSINESS LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

These business license requirements are not new. They are established in City ordinances and have been in place; however, they have not always been consistently enforced. The City is moving forward with applying these requirements uniformly to all businesses subject to them—not just those who voluntarily contact the City or self-report. Our goal is to ensure fair and consistent enforcement for everyone.

A business license is generally required for:

🏢 Businesses located in Argo

If you own, operate, or occupy a business location within the City limits, an annual business license is required.

🔨 Contractors and service providers

Contractors performing work in Argo—including electrical, plumbing, construction, remodeling, heating and air, and other trades—must obtain the required business license before beginning work. Additional permits or inspections may also be required.

🚚 Food trucks and event vendors

Food trucks and vendors operating at events in Argo must obtain the appropriate license. Food trucks must also provide a current health department license. Short-term and single-event peddler's licenses are available.

🏠 Rental property owners

Owners who rent property within Argo may be required to obtain a business license. This includes residential rentals, commercial rentals, and short-term vacation rentals such as Airbnb and VRBO.

📍 Businesses in Argo's Police Jurisdiction

Certain businesses located outside the City limits but within Argo's established police jurisdiction may also be subject to City business licensing. Alabama law limits qualifying police-jurisdiction license amounts to no more than 50% of the corresponding City-limit license rate.
